Nose, Nose, Anything Goes

Yep, that's right...I was just sitting on the couch with my wife, minding my own business when my uncle BURST into the room and said those cryptic words.  Okay, so the couch in question was in HIS house and it was HIS birthday party, but those points are inconsequential to the nonsensical phrase he just uttered.

He asked us where that phrase came from...of course, we didn't know.  Neither did my aunt and uncle who were sitting on the other couch, nor my aunt nor cousin happened to be unfortunately in the room at the time of the disturbance.  But of course, in today's NEED TO KNOW (or the b-day boy's wishes) society, we turned to the one with all the answers...GOOGLE.

Apparently, the saying is said by Twinkle's the Magic Elephant, who was a part of the King Leonardo and His Short Subjects cartoon show which ran in the early sixties.  So, on his 60th Birthday, he all of a sudden remembered a quote from a cartoon he watched before his teenage years....which makes me think...what obscure quotes from my childhood do I think of on a regular basis.....

The "not so obscure" one from Alice in Wonderland is "Curiouser and Curiouser"....said/thought when something, well, curious occurs...

The "more obscure" one from Alice in Wonderland is "Move down, Move down! (movedownmovedown, movedownmovedown, movedownmovedown, movedowwwwwn)"...said/thought whenever I am or a group that I am in is asked to move seats...

From Press Your Luck...Big Money, Big Money, No Whammies! (I understand it is actually "Big Bucks," but that is not what I say/think)...said/thought when I've tried something multiple times and hope that this time it will work...

From the Simpsons...Do'H!....said when something goes wrong, just like Homer....

From Rain Man...Definitely, Definitely...said when I have a "Rain Man" moment, which is more often than I would like to admit...

Ahhh, childhood...it's a great thing to think about....now that I'm expecting a child, though, and knowing what's on TV NOW makes me a little worried what my little one will start quoting...

We'll see...until then...

Thanks for reading!

Going through Classics: Sleepy Hollow and Dracula

So, some of you may know that Anna and I both bought Kindles...and we LOVE them!

While looking for cheesy romance novels, Anna stumbled upon the free book section. Within this vast library of harlequin greatness are some great classics...

Not wanting to pay for my a new book, I decided to download a handful and work my way through them. This week (really a couple weeks ago, I'm slow at this blogging thing): The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Dracula

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irvine

Washington Irvine's classic tale of heroism, bravery, love and decapitation.....okay, maybe just love and decapitation....well, mainly just decapitation. Even though I knew how the story went, I still found myself hoping Ichabod Crane would pop out of the woods and belt into song...or something like that. Great short story, makes me want to visit the New England states in the fall..but NOT at night.

Dracula by Bram Stoker

The vampire genre has exploded as of late...with all the tweeny-bopper blood suckers out there, we tend to forget the original. I had to give it a second look, "Is Dracula REALLY a classic?" After reading it again...YES. It is told through a series of diary entries, newspaper clippings and letters. For most of the book, it makes the reader discern for him/herself what is really going on. Modern vampire fans won't enjoy it because they know too much about what a vampire is, but reading it with an older mindset and allowing yourself to get sucked into the early 19th century, you won't be diasapointed. No half naked werewolves in this story, but a monster so evil that not even the mighty Edward Cullen could stand up to it.

That's all for now...next time: Gulliver's Travels

Case for more HOV lanes

Okay, I know I'm not the first person to complain about I-5 traffic, BUT maybe I'm the first to rationalize the absolute NEED for more HOV lanes.  See the above photo.  It doesn't matter if you carpool or not, you're sitting in the SAME traffic.  Over the past few months I have traveled to Seattle and RARELY is there any benefit for having a second (or third or fourth) person in the car.

With the recent "GO GREEN" excitement that is sweeping the country, you would think this would be a no-brainer.  ESPECIALLY in Washington.  The EverGREEN state!  Oh, they're trying....we're constantly urged to carpool...lower our emissions and carbon footprint.  While it's all well and good that it's a good idea for the environment...in today's society, we need some sort of kickback.  Enter:  The HOV lane!  A fast track to wherever you are going all because you're doing your part.....yeah right.  NOT anymore!

So, here's my idea.  It's simple.  5-lane highway = 3 HOV lanes!  THAT will get people to carpool!  I'm really not for the whole "carbon offset" idea...BUT, I would be willing to concede the middle lane to single drivers who want to pay a toll for it.

Who does this screw....yep, the single drivers.  But really, if the HOV lanes are as promising as they can be...actually allowing drivers to get to their destination without too much trouble, yeah I think more single drivers will make an assertive effort to carpool.  Right now, there's NO INCENTIVE!

Anyway....those are my thoughts....not necessarily in jest!  Let the Jason-bashing begin! :)

Random Thoughts

Inspired by a fun weekend....

If you eat massive amounts of Jell-O and start dancing around...will you ever stop?

How effective is a towel wrapped in lemon juice attached to a snorkel as a (fire created) smoke filter?

If you were able to visit the future or visit the past (and come back) what would you do?

Do vegetarians own meat thermometers?

How did the T-Rex scratch his back?  Were there trees THAT big?

Happy Monday ALL!

Ministry of Optimism

10 minutes until Dinner is ready from Thai Wok, so how about a blog entry...

So, if there was a Ministry of Optimism, would you join? Or does the word "ministry" turn you off? I know that many people associate ministry with religious-based faith and to join one ministry would be blasphemous!

I don't know...I like to think that no matter what faith one may belong to, there is always a little room for optimism. The only requirement of membership to this ministry is to think of at least one optimistic thought per day and try to look for the best on every situation.

Strive for perfection and you'll end up at least on the positive side of things right?

Well....it was a random thought, but now that I think of it, I would join the Ministry of Optimism, if it existed. Which...I think it does....and I think I'm there...anyone wanna join? ;)

Inspired by a 17-year old...

...meet Cassi!  I need to put this down because it continually is on my mind.  As many of you know, this past weekend was a culmination of close to 5 months of training a group of 81 runners to participate in the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon.

Though everyone finished, some had to make compromises on their race.  It is an inevitable fact of distance running...sometimes you just have a bad day...and sometimes that bad day comes on race day.  I am super proud of all the runners/walkers out there, it takes a lot to even attempt such a race, let alone raise money for a cause during their training season.  The team raised over $92,500 for Seattle Children's Hospital Cancer Research Department!!!!

But I digress...back to Cassi!  I've had the pleasure of running with her and her mom a lot this season and watching them both grow into distance athletes.  So, when I received a text message tracking their progress and found out that they slowed down to the point of being "swept" (not being able to finish), Anna and I started to panic!

Our friend, Paul, rushed me out to the nearest drop off point and I hustled out to catch them to see what was up.  Well, in short, Cassi's knee was bothering her....after a healthy dose of BioFreeze and a couple of extra strength Tylenol, she was back on her way running again...

Unfortunately, due to other circumstances, Linda was out of gas and had to turn off and finish the race early.  An incredibly hard, and BRAVE, decision to make.  After informing Anna of the situation, I ran to catch up with Cassi again and told her the news and asked her if she wanted to continue.  After some thought, it was a GO!  But we were still behind the cut-off time limit.  So, we hustled and bustled to mile 15, crossing it mere minutes before the police started to divert traffic to the finish line.  We had made it...

However, Cassi was tired...in pain...and didn't know if she could finish.  There comes a time in every runner's race that they must look inside themselves and decide whether it's worth it.  I told Cassi that I would stick with her to the end if she wanted to try and that I believed she could do it.  After some tears, she said she was with me.

The next 11 miles were the toughest I would ever face.  Emotions and pain were a constant roller coaster.  It was very hard to see this young lady go through so much pain and not knowing the right words to say.  With the occasional comforting pat on the back and feeble attempts at humor to distract her, we trudged our way along the horrible Alaskan Way Viaduct in 70+ degree weather.

When the words ran out and the tears kept coming, I just kept thinking to myself how incredible Cassi is....a 17-year old, who trained all season with her mom, stuck out on the course with nothing but decreasing miles ahead of her and the hope that her legs wouldn't give out before the finish line.

Well, they didn't.  She finished.  She is now a MARATHONER!  I know a lot of people who would have quit.  I know she thought about it, but she didn't.  She persevered.  I let her cross that finish line on her own, the strong and confident young woman she is.  As she enters her senior year in high school, I hope she knows that nothing can stop her.  I can't think of many things tougher than what she accomplished this weekend and I can't think of many people who would have pushed through like she did.  It was amazing, it was inspiring, easily my second favorite marathon moment ever!  (For my top marathon moment, click here)

I've said it before, and the team agrees, but...Cassi, you're AWESOME!

And so it begins...

Hello everyone!

Today is the beginning of the end for the Inaugural Season of RallyNW!  Today, Anna and I get to meet the Rally Foundation staff members that we've been working with all season long.  We get to participate in a charity event going on at the Mariner's game tonight!  Then tomorrow we get to tour Seattle Children's Hospital and Research Center to see how the money we have helped raise is going to be spent.  Friday is set-up and execution of our Pasta Dinner to honor our participants in their accomplishments.  Then Saturday is RACE DAY!

A quick rundown is this....last year we were approached by Ron, a friend of ours.  He and his sister, who is a huge advocate of Childhood Cancer Research, were throwing an idea around of creating a charity running team to benefit Seattle Children's Hospital.  See, they lost their niece the year before to Burkett's Lymphoma and were very passionate about increasing funding and awareness for this and other Childhood Cancers.  A lot of hard work and fun times later, here we are...80+ participants in Seatte, Tacoma and Olympia going to run in the Rock 'n' Roll Seattle Marathon and Half Marathon this Saturday.

The best part.....we've raised OVER $90,000.  93% of which is going directly to Seattle Children's Hospital Cancer Research Department.  It is OVERWHELMING and inspiring all at the same time.  These are wonderful people doing a wonderful thing.

So, that's the next few days....we'll check back in with pictures and good stories, I'm sure!  Even though THIS season is ending, we're already planning for next year.  Want in?  Want to run, walk or even just volunteer?  Shoot me an e-mail and I'll hook you up!  It's going to be a BLAST!

As we've said all season long....RALLY ON!
